Agitation 2020
Artist Statement
Andy Denton’s sculptures use metal and ceramics to combine figurative and abstract forms in representing notions of contemporary spirituality and agnosticism. Drawing inspiration from artists including sculptor HC Westermann, and the band, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Denton’s totemic sculptures bridge sci-fi vernacular and craft traditions while emphasizing the inherent spiritual and critical values of art. Denton’s recent fantastical and absurd sculptures address his experiences with isolation and virtual connectivity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Distorted pyramidal bodies reference the all-seeing Eye of Providence, which serves as a metaphor for social media in all its benevolence and horror. The juxtaposed porcelain and steel represent the precariousness of our social and environmental climate.

These are all pedestal sized sculptures no higher than 24 inches. Made and shown during the 2020 Covit-19 pandemic isolation. They were on exhibit in a gallery but not seen by many people due because covit-19 cases were running rampant during November.
I'd like to make one of these in an outdoor size. Comment below which one you would like to see bigger. Thanks for reading.
